Exhibit Spaces and the Museum Store will be open Sundays from 1pm-5pm, and Thursdays noon to 8pm, November 26th through December 24th.
Regular hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 10am to 4pm. We are closed on Mondays. Regular Thursday hours after December 24th are noon to 6:00pm.
Athens, Ohio – November 17, 2017: The Southeast Ohio History Center will open its doors on Sundays this holiday season to those looking for something fun to do or to purchase unique gifts with a local flavor. In addition to its regular hours, the History Center will be open from 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Sundays and Thursdays from noon to 8:00pm, beginning November 26th and continuing through December 24th. “This is a time of year when families and friends come together; and it is a time of year for giving,” said Bosha Green, Museum Coordinator and Store manager. “We wanted to be a part of the excitement.”
Board members of the History Center will be volunteering their time to make this happen, and they are hoping that people will stop in to get a taste of days gone by. The Museum Store has a variety of items for sale. “There is something for everyone,” said Ms. Green. “The nice thing is that our inventory reflects the spirit and history of our region. We are now featuring local artists like Sledding Hill Pottery, Renaissance Farms, Julie Elman, Sticky Pete’s Syrup, Athens Block, Sara Berens, and Ohio is HOME just to name a few. Coming November 25th will be our new publication, Growing Up in Athens, chronicling 100 years of memories and stories from Athens residents. We also carry the new book, 40 Years on the Bricks, a wonderful look back at the last 40 years as recorded by the Athens News.”
There are several exhibits currently on display at the History Center, including 50 Years of Funk – Ohio University’s Famous Marching 110; The Stuff of Dreams – Portraits by Elise Mitchell Sanford; Three Thousand Miles from Home – Southeast Ohioans in the First World War; and Made from Southeast Ohio – The Region’s Colorful Brick Industry. Those interested in becoming members of the History Center can sign up when they visit and receive free admission and a discount on their purchases at the Store. Sherry Hill, a Board member who will be volunteering her time, hopes the History Center will gain a few new members. “Our members receive many benefits beyond free admission and discounts – and the History Center in turn receives financial support so vital to its operations. It is a win for everyone.”
The History Center has just completed the quiet phase of a capital campaign to complete initial renovations of the historic First Christian Church. “We want to show off this beautiful building to the public,” stated Executive Director Tom O’Grady. “This is only the beginning, but we are all so very proud of what has been accomplished thus far. And, we are excited about what’s in store for the future.”
