East Elementary Sixth Grade had their Writer’s Celebration at the Southeast Ohio History Center on Friday, March 30, 2018. This was the culminating celebration of a writing project that began in January. Each student wrote a historical fiction story that was either inspired by or based on an interview he/she conducted. The students interviewed family members and friends to find out what they were doing during the time of WWII (1939-1945). The students read a variety of books, both fiction and nonfiction, based on WWII that covered the Home Front, Pacific Front, and European Front. Once a topic was decided on, the students conducted research to learn more about specific details. After the setting was created, the students imagined a character to place in that setting, designed the plot, and then wrote the story. For the celebration, 53 students shared their Afterword and some chose to read an excerpt from their stories at the History Center. The Afterword helped to uncover what was fact and what was fiction.
