On April 9, 1865, rebel General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox, Virginia. 150 years later, we are celebrating the closing phase of the war and the return home of Athens Countians who served their country.
Friday, April 10, at 12:00pm at the Museum; Athens at Appomattox, Cyrus Moore will give a presentation which will discuss the 116th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Appomattox Campaign and the end of the war.
Saturday, April 11 at 1:00pm at the Athens Co. Courthouse steps; Muster Out at the Courthouse, reenactors will gather in front of the Athens County Courthouse and hold a mustering out. This symbolic display will commemorate the end of the rebellion as soldiers leave the army and return to civilian life.
Saturday, April 11th at 3:00pm at the Museum; Presentation by William Quartman, author of A Young General and the Fall of Richmond. Quartman will give a presentation on the material contained in his book on the Federal Army’s youngest general, Bavarian-born Godfrey Weitzel, commander of the XXV Corps.
