Athens Asylum Conference a success!

Our first Asylum Conference was a great coming together of minds.

We would like to thank the Ohio University Geography Department, the Planning and Space Management Department for co-sponsoring the event.

Thanks also to our wonderful speakers; George Eberts, Tom O’Grady, Tom Walker, Katherine Ziff, Bob Loversidge, Shawna Bolin and Joe Shields.

The schedule of events were:

10:00am                   Introduction

10:15-11:00am       The Evolution of Mental Health Treatment Over the Tenure of the Athens Asylum given by George Eberts

11:00-11:45am        Herman Haerlin and Levi Scofield- The Men who Created a Place Called the Athens Asylum given by Tom O’Grady

11:45-12:30pm        Athens Asylum Cemeteries given by Tom Walker

12:30-1:30pm         Lunch

1:30-2:15pm           The Kirkbride Plan: Social Control or Humanistic Impulse? give by Katherine Ziff

2:15-3:00pm           Architectural Assessment by Bob Loversidge

3:00-3:45pm          Ridges Comprehensive Master Plan Update given by Shawna Bolin and Joe Shields

Directions to the Athens Asylum Auditorium: Take Route 682 along the river to N. Ridge Drive.  Go up the drive until you see a building on the right side of the road with large, white pillars.  Parking is across the street or above the Auditorium.
