Lyceum Lunch w/ Nancy Manring “Building a Bipartisan Environmental Movement in Appalachia.”

The Southeast Ohio History Center’s Lyceum Luncheon Brown Bag Speaker Series will host Nancy Manring, Thursday September 24th at 12 o’clock noon. Manring will present Building a Bipartisan Environmental Movement in Appalachia.

In recent years, we’ve seen a growing partisan divide over environmental issues. Today, 56% of Democrats call themselves environmentalists, and only 27% of Republicans self-identify as environmentalists. Manring’s presentation examines these trends and offers strategies for reaching across the partisan divide to build a place-based, bipartisan environmental movement to advocate for environmental sustainability in Appalachia. This presentation is based on her book, A World of Wounds: Rebuilding a Bipartisan Environmental Movement and Cultivating Authentic Hope, released by Stanford University Press in November 2025.

Nancy Manring is a faculty member in the Political Science department, and the Director of the Environmental Science and Sustainability major at Ohio University. She teaches courses in environmental and climate change politics, introductory and upper-level courses on sustainability, and public dispute resolution. Her previous research focused on the use of collaborative dispute resolution processes in the US Forest Service.
